- The global rise of foreign real estate investments has been a controversial issue in cities around the world. The influx of overseas capital into domestic markets has been seen as a direct cause of social problems such as declines in housing affordability. Capitalizing on popular sentiments, media and political discourses often deploy highly essentialist narratives that attribute blame for these longstanding issues to specific sociocultural groups, such as “immigrants,” “Asian investors” and “baby boomers.”This book by Dallas Rogers is published at a time when identity politics and populist sentiments increasingly dominate public life and debates, not least in the divisive issue area of housing and real estate. In the book, Rogers sets out to critique and problematize particularistic perspectives by adopting what he calls an “anticipatory historical methodology that de-essentializes and historicizes the globalization of real estate” (p. 15).
