摘要

We introduce a partially linear functional-coefficient panel data model, which allows us to view the impact of urbanization as a nonparametric function of economic development level, to estimate the nonlinear effect of urbanization on informality. The empirical analysis is based on a large panel-dataset including 127 countries throughout 2002–2013, and the empirical results reveal that the effect of urbanization on informality depends on the level of economic development. Our findings are relevant for policymakers in tailoring their policies toward combating informality in the process of urbanization.
