摘要

There are numerous forms of densification taking place in Johannesburg and the surrounding area; the vast majority is through the auto-construction of residents. Backyard rooms and units, the repurposing and reconfiguring of older multi-storey buildings, and the pirating of spaces such as basements and rooftops have been key sites of resident-led densification. The state, however, has not been able to constructively support these modes and instead has plumped for parallel plans and policies.
