摘要

This paper with a comprehensive overview of the process of urbanization as well as the morphological evolution of the city of Yazd throughout history, investigate the influences of urban planning, modernization and western tendencies in the development of the city. The applied methodology is a multidisciplinary approach based on a historico-geographical approach and morphological investigation. The study developed critical thinking regarding the urban design and planning system of Yazd city. It revealed that the process of emergence and evolution of the city occurred in four phases. In this regard, it demonstrated the critical role of reformers, real estate developers and middle classes as active agents of changes in establishing urban planning and development. Moreover, this study demonstrates the reasons which often urban planning was criticised for its inefficiency, ineffectiveness, lack of enforcement and related issues of inequality in practice.
